GPS Precision and Privacy Trade-offs
Choosing how many decimal places to include in your coordinates affects both accuracy and privacy:
- 2 decimal places: Approx. 1.1 km (0.68 mi) accuracy — suitable for general area-level forecasts. Example: 53.22, -0.54
- 3 decimal places: Approx. 111 meters (121 yards) — good for neighborhood-level precision. Example: 53.225, -0.545
- 4 decimal places: Approx. 11 meters (12 yards) — close to building-level accuracy. Example: 53.2253, -0.5454
Lower precision offers more privacy while still providing useful weather data.
